FE REPORT | Monday, 25 March 2024

A Dhaka court on Sunday sent former Secretary Proshanto Kumar Roy to jail after he surrendered in a case filed for amassing about Tk12.5 million beyond his known source of income.
Judge Mohammad Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court, Dhaka passed the order.
Lawyer Mir Ahmed Ali Salam who appeared in the court hearing on behalf of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) confirmed the matter. Proshanto Kumar Roy got anticipatory bail from the High Court for a period of six weeks after the case was filed.
However, there was a directive in the HC order that the former secretary of the government would surrender before a competent court after this period, said the ACC lawyer.
As per the directive, Proshanto Kumar Roy surrendered in a lower court that on different dates upheld the HC order.
Finally, the court on Sunday held a final hearing on his bail petition and rejected it. He was later sent to Keraniganj Central jail.
On June 5 last year, ACC's Deputy Director Mashiur Rahman filed the case with its integrated district office in Dhaka accusing Proshanto Kumar Roy, who was also project director of Ekti Bari Ekti Khamar Project, of amassing about Tk12.5 million beyond his known source of income.
