CHATTOGRAM, Sept 08: Former Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akter has lodged a complaint with a Chattogram court against six officials of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), including its Chief Banaj Kumar Majumder, for torturing him in police custody.
Babul Akter, who has been in jail since January 9, 2021, filed the case through his lawyers in the court of Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Dr Begum Zebunnesa on Thursday.
The case has been filed under Section 15(1) of the Torture and Custodial Deaths (Prevention) Act, 2013 and Section 5(2) of the relevant Act.
Other accused in the case are: Md Nazmul Hasan, SP Chattogram district PBI; Naima Sultana, SP Chattogram city PBI; Santosh Kumar Chakma, former police inspector of Chattogram city PBI and currently officer-in-charge (OC) of Khulshi police station of CMP; AKM Mohiuddin Salim, former inspector of Chattogram district PBI and currently assistant commissioner of DB of CMP; and Kazi Enayet Kabir, inspector of Chattogram district PBI.
Babul Akter's lawyers complained in the hearing that Babul was tortured at the PBI Chattogram metro and district offices from May 10 to May 17, 2021. Lawyers alleged that Babul was treated cruelly for extracting a false confession from him in the case of his wife's murder.
The court would make a decision on the complaint on Sept 19, said Babul's lawyer Kofil Uddin.
On June 5, 2016, Babul's wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu was shot and hacked to death by miscreants in the GEC area of Chattogram city. At that time, she went to the GEC intersection to drop her elder son to the school bus.
Babul was in Dhaka at the time of the incident. Later, he came to Chattogram and filed a murder case against unknown miscreants. After filing the final report of Babul's case, he was made the main accused in the charge sheet of the case filed by his father-in-law.
PBI claimed that Mahmuda was killed with the planning and financing of Babul Akter. He planned to kill his wife because of his "extramarital affair". To get the job done, he hired killers for three lakh taka through a source (informant).
