Ex-Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chy arrested, sent to jail
FE REPORT | Wednesday, 8 April 2026
A Dhaka court ordered former Speaker of Parliament Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury to be sent to jail after her arrest in a case filed over an attempted murder during the July Uprising.
The Detective Branch (DB) of police sought a two-day remand to interrogate her, while her lawyer petitioned the court for bail.
Following a hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana rejected both the remand and bail pleas and directed that she be sent to jail. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was produced before the court at 1:55 pm and later taken to the lockup of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka.
In its petition, police said the prime accused in the case, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, along with Shirin - named as the third accused - and others, were involved in key state decisions, and armed attacks were carried out under their direct or indirect instructions.
