Tuesday, 25 September 2007

Former Telecommunications Secretary Nazmul Ahsan Chowdhury faces further cross-examination by defence counsel for detained former Telecommunications Minister Mohammad Nasim who stands in trial in the WorldTel scam case as the High Court Monday declared unlawful a special judge's court order, reports UNB.
A division bench, comprising Justice M Ali Asgar Khan and Justice Mamnoon Rahman, passed the order while resolving the petition filed by Nasim as the government attorney declined to encounter the petition.
Earlier, a special court trying high-profile corrupt suspects had rejected an application for recalling prosecution witness Nazmul Ahsan for cross-examination by the defence counsel "for ends of justice" in the WorldTel scam case.
On June 26, the trial of former Telecommunications Minister in the WorldTel-scam case began in the anti-graft court, set up at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, with the testimony of prosecution witnesses.
According to the prosecution story, Nasim, by abusing power, allowed WorldTel Holdings Ltd to install 0.3 million digital telephones in the capital without floating tender.
Nasim's associate, AHS Rahman, director of Consociates Ltd, was also implicated in the case as he was illegally appointed consultant by the then Telecommunications Minister to supervise the project that "harmed the country's interests".
