Excavation at Vasu Bihar, Bogra

Saturday, 14 June 2008

ACCORDING to a newspaper report, possibly the remains of a 1500-year-old university is there beneath the Vasu Bihar, in Bogra. The national archaeological excavation team believes that the site might have links with the Pala dynasty, during the reign of which the Vasu Bihar was built.

If the remains are unearthed unharmed, the nation would get a major historic asset. This heritage site would enrich tourism in the country. It is believed that the heritage site lying beneath the area has links to historical Buddhist sites and monuments at Nalanda, Bihar in India. It would draw people at home and abroad to visit the site.

But it was also reported that the work to excavate this invaluable heritage site came to a halt since January due to fund constraints. According to the leader of the archeological team, by dividing the Vasu Bihar and Bihar Dhap, by a one-km road and cultivable land, the excavation could proceed properly, to find out the remains of the university complex.

So we would request the government to give the fund for the project, considering its long-term return to the economy. Much time has already been lost in starting the work. Earlier excavation had started in 1973-74 and continued for three years.
