Excess doctors in Bangladesh
Tuesday, 20 February 2018
A Bangla daily referring to a research publication of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) reported that in the near future MBBS doctors and graduate dentists in Bangladesh would not get employment they deserve. There were 11,529 qualified physicians in 2016 and there would be more of them in the coming years. But the country needs them at home. Even today adequate doctors are not available in all areas of the capital city itself. It is difficult for the government to retain doctors in government hospitals and clinics in rural Bangladesh. These are visible signs of scarcity of qualified doctors in other government establishments too as doctors in increasing numbers had been leaving for employment abroad.
The government should set up a medical college in each district to employ more doctors and impart medical education to more students. Bangladesh also needs more medical universities for higher studies and research in medical science. Thanks to the Health Minister who recently stated that government had decided to establish one public medical college in each district and one medical university in each division of the country. It will help medical education in the country to prosper.
