Expansion of medicaleducation is necessary

Sunday, 3 May 2009

THE present government is committed to providing medical service to the rural people, especially at every union. The commitment is praiseworthy. Modern medical service to the majority of the population, who live in the rural Bangladesh, is long overdue. Successive governments could not, in almost four decades, ensure medical service to them. Medical service requires doctors, medicine and medical equipment.
The rural hospitals are facing an acute shortage of physicians, paramedics and managerial staff. Hospital management requires experienced managerial staff. It is not the job of doctors to waste time in administration.
Bangladesh needs a huge number of graduate medical physicians to serve its rural hospitals. But graduate and post-graduate doctors are not willing to serve rural Bangladesh for lack of civic facilities and also for absence of opportunities of private practice, the prime objective of most of the doctors.
Imported medical equipment are indispensable for modern medical treatment. Trained manpower is needed for operating and maintenance of the medical equipment.
The government needs to expand medical education at different levels. Paramedic courses and technical education for handling and maintenance of medical equipment is also necessary. In every administrative district, a medical college could be set up for under-graduate studies and a medical college in each division is needed to provide higher courses. At least a dozen paramedic institutions could be set up in different regions to have trained people to treat the rural population.
The government should allocate the funds for these objectives. Bangladesh cannot waste further time. It is time for the government to ensure the welfare of the majority population. Trained manpower in the heath sector could also be sent abroad.
