Experts at a sub-regional workshop in the city Tuesday stressed the importance of concerted efforts of all countries to alleviate poverty from the world, including Bangladesh, reports UNB.
"Poverty is not the problem of any particular country . it's a global problem. So, all will have to work together to remove it," said Dr Abbas Sadri, Director of ISESCO Regional Office in Tehran.
Bangladesh National Commission for Unesco (BANCU) under the Ministry of Education in cooperation with Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) and Unesco organised the 3-day Sub-regional Experts Meeting on Poverty Eradication in Developing Countries at its conference room.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid spoke at the inaugural session of the workshop as the chief guest with Education Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury in the chair.
Economist Dr Quazi Kholiquzzman Ahmed delivered the keynote speech.
Nahid said the developed countries make huge allocations for defense in their budgets. "If the allocations are provided to the poor countries, it'll help remove poverty from the world," he said urging the developed nations to extend their support to the poor countries.
Referring to the government's initiatives to alleviate poverty, Nahid said there is no alternative to education to remove poverty.
Representatives from Iran, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, the Maldives and host Bangladesh are taking part in the expert-level workshop.
