The country's IT experts and stakeholders are in favour of giving VAS (value added service) licence to local entrepreneurs to flourish its domestic market.
Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) has already submitted its recommendation to the Ministry of Telecommunication and the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) for issuing VAS licence to the domestic entrepreneurs.
Besides, the organisation leaders have met Hasanul Huq Inu, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on telecommunication ministry, and placed their demand in this regard.
BASIS senior vice president and bdjobs.com chief executive officer A K M Fahim Mashroor told the FE that local IT stakeholders, including Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB), Content Providers and Aggregators Association of Bangladesh (CPAAB), and Bangladesh Association of Call Centre and Outsourcing (BACCO) will sit with the government regarding this issue.
They will organise a roundtable titled 'Role of Proposed VAS Licensing Guideline in Citizen Service Creation and National Development' on May 30 to discuss the matter with all the stakeholders.
Mr Fahim mentioned that the issuance of VAS licence will encourage local talents to provide innovative VAS service.
ISPAB president Akhtaruzzaman Monju also said, "It should be done for protecting the local talents."
Now the content providers are facing problems to generate their actual revenue, and a guideline will ease the problems, he also said.
The ISPAB president told the FE that the telecom regulator took correct decision regarding this matter.
Earlier, former president of Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS) Mustafa Jabbar said in future various services would be totally mobile phone-oriented following people's demand.
He said the BTRC's initiatives would protect small entrepreneurs of the sector from the clasp of big companies, and thus help them survive.
It would also create significant employment opportunities in the country, and bring market diversification, he added.
According to the CPAAB, size of the country's VAS market is Tk 1.10 billion, which is meagre compared to the neighbouring countries.
