FE Report
The government's high-powered expert team, formed to verify the existence of melamine in imported powdered milk of eight foreign brands, will submit its report today (Sunday).
The convener of the 12-member expert committee Mohammad Ali Patwary told reporters on the day that they are preparing the report to submit it to the government.
"By tonight, we'll prepare our report to be submitted to the commerce ministry tomorrow," he told reporters at the interval of the committee's day-long crucial meeting.
The members of the expert committee sat together at around 9.30am on the day at the commerce ministry and continued the meting until filing of this report at around 8.30 pm.
The expert committee met after receiving the test reports of the samples of milk powder sent for laboratory tests at home and abroad on October 21.
The committee received reports from the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC), the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial and Research (BCSIR) on Thursday last while another report from Bangkok was received yesterday (Sunday).
Samples of powdered milk of eight brands were sent to the regional office of the UN Food and Agricultural Organsiaton in Bangkok for laboratory testing.
"We can't tell you anything right at this moment about the findings of the test reports. We are examining three separate test reports," said Mr Patwary.
Regarding the reason of the marathon meeting, a member of the expert committee said: "There are some contradictions in the three test reports. We are examining those to reach a consensus so that we can prepare a report based on the test reports."
He, however, refused to pass details about the contradictory issues.
The Ministry of Commerce on October 20 in an official order announced the formation of the 12 member-expert committee with its joint secretary Mohammad Ali Patwary as convener.
Following confusion on existence of melamine in powder milk of eight foreign brands, the government after an inter-ministerial meeting decided to form the committee to carry out fresh laboratory tests at home and abroad for an authentic report.
The confusion arose after the Dhaka University's Chemistry Department revealed that the powdered milk of eight foreign brands tested melamine positive to its investigation.
