Explore new markets for export: Titu

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 31 January 2024

The government has asked the economic ministers/commercial counsellors at the Bangladesh missions abroad to explore new markets for the country's potential export items, especially jute and leather goods.
They were also asked to persuade the countries where they are working to participate in the Dhaka International Trade Fair next year.
State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu gave the direction to the 23 economic ministers/commercial counsellors at a virtual meeting from his Secretariat office on Tuesday, according to a statement issued by the commerce ministry.
Senior secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Tapan Kanti Ghosh presided over the meeting.
The state minister also emphasised the need for removing trade barriers, if there is any.
He instructed the ministers/counsellors to send a list of top ten export-import items, including their prices.
He also ordered them to identify the highly demandable goods for exporting from Bangladesh.
Mr. Tutu called for increasing communication with exporters, importers, trade associations and business firms even at the individual level across the world.
The state minister observed that economic ministers/commercial councilors would have to be innovative.
Mr Titu said, "We have to lay emphasis on the diversification of products by reducing dependence on the export of apparel items. There are many exportable products including agro food, sea food, plastics, ceramics, bicycle, furniture and tea. Necessary measures should be taken to capture new markets for their exports. Also, alternative markets for imports should be sought on an urgent basis.
Senior officials of the ministry, among others, attended the meeting.
