Export earnings reach $14.84b in 9 months

CHITTAGONG, Apr 30: The country's export earnings from the major items in the first nine months of the current fiscal year have reached US$ 14.84 billion, the EPB sources said. Statistics available with the Export Promotion Bureau, Chittagong region states that the readymade garments (RMG) sector remains predominant in the export earning as the knitwear exporters of the readymade garment earned $6.6 billion, up by 44 per cent over the corresponding period of the last fiscal. The woven exporters earned $5.9 billion in the nine months until March 2011, up by 38 per cent from the same period of last fiscal. Export earnings from jute and jute products, home textile sector and frozen foods also registered a marked rise by above 50 per cent compared to that of the last fiscal, according to the EPB statistics. Export earning from jute and jute products is $837 million, home textile $555 million and frozen foods export earning stood at $471 million. Growth of export earning from home textile sector marked 98 per cent compared to same period of the fiscal year 2009-10. Sources said that footwear export increased by 50 per cent from the same period of last fiscal as it earned $222 million while leather export is $210 million and leather products $42 million. Director of EPB Chittagong region Abdul Moyen stressed the need for market exploration through single country fairs as well as steps for consolidation of the existing market to boost up the export earning.
