Export earnings to reach higher level: Nanak

Textiles and jute minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak has announced the government's commitment to boosting export earnings from jute and jute goods to an extraordinary level.
Addressing a meeting with officials from the Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation (BTMC) in Dhaka on Tuesday, he expressed a strategic focus on revitalising the jute industry.
"We're addressing the challenges faced by the jute industry to restore it to its former glory. Our aim is to revive the golden era of jute," said Mr Nanak.
"We aspire to bring jute back to its traditional prominence, and the prime minister is personally dedicated to achieving this goal…" Acknowledging the existing issues within the jute industry, the minister affirmed ongoing efforts to understand and resolve them.
He highlighted the government's intention to engage with farmers to comprehensively address the challenges faced by the sector.
Meanwhile, textiles and jute secretary Abdur Rauf provided additional insights, noting that 17 state-owned jute mills have been leased.
Among the mills, five are currently under private management for production and export.
Furthermore, two foreign companies have made 100 per cent direct investment in jute mills, with a Taiwanese company expressing interest in contributing to the sector.
Rauf reported positive progress in discussions with these stakeholders.
BTMC chairman Brig Gen Md Ziaul Haque and BTMC secretary Nurul Alam, among others, also spoke.
The collaborative efforts of the government and industry stakeholders reflect a proactive approach to rejuvenating the jute industry and elevating its status on the global stage.
