Export, import thru Benapole come to halt for a while
Tuesday, 24 June 2008
Export and import activities through the Benapole land-port came to a halt for nearly one and half hours Sunday over the return of eight Indian trucks seized about five years ago, reports UNB from Benapole.
However, the standoff over the issue was resolved following a meeting by officials from the two countries.
Eight Indian trucks, stranded in Bangladesh for last five years over legal complexities, were sent back to India through the Benapole port Sunday following court orders.
Customs sources said an importer, Salam Enterprise, on May 5 in 2003 had imported eight truckloads of jute-seeds from India through the Bhomra land-port. The entire consignment of jute seeds was held by the Customs authorities for non-fulfillment of import rules.
BDR in Satkhira seized the trucks while being taken to Benapole from Bhomra customs station. BDR also filed a case against 19 people, including the then customs super Shamsur Rahman, in this connection.
