Export, import thru' Benapole, Sonamasjid come to a halt

Friday, 27 February 2009

BENAPOLE, Feb 26 (UNB): Indian Border Security Force (BSF) halted export-import between Bangladesh and India through land ports Thursday noon, as waves of tension flowed up to the border camps following the mutiny by Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) troops at their Dhaka headquarters.

The Indian border troops did not allow passport-holding passengers from Bangladesh to get in or out of India.

Black Cats and additional BSF troops with heavy firearms were deployed at India's Petrapole port, opposite to the Benapole port.

"The BSF troops were also found positioned on rooftops of high-rise building with heavy arms pointed towards Bangladesh," says an eyewitness account of the high security alert as their counterpart rose in a revolt in some bordering areas also.

Hundreds of goods-laden trucks stranded at Benapole were taken to safer places.

The BDR jawans were found patrolling the border outposts here.

Chapainawabganj correspondent of the news agency reports export-import operations through Sonamasjid port also came to a standstill following the two-day BDR rebellion at their headquarters and a backlash here.

A tense situation was created in the area after the BDR troops opened fire from their complex in the morning. A BDR man sustained bullet injury as a bullet slipped out from his gun mistakenly at the BDR camp.
