KATHMANDU, Nov 17 (Xinhua): Export of Nepali hand- knotted woolen carpets went up 14 per cent in value in the first quarter of the current fiscal year started in mid-July from the same period of last fiscal, with total exports touching 24.90 million US dollars, according to official sources.
However, in terms of quantity, exports were down by over 6 per cent, according to the statistics of the Trade and Export Promotion Center (TEPC).
Nepal exported 357,565 square metres of hand-knotted woolen carpets during the period compared with 382,252 square metres during the same period last year, The Kathmandu Post reported today.
The rise in value despite a decline in the volume of exports indicates that the country's largest exportable item is receiving a handsome price in key international markets.
The United States became the largest buyer of Nepali hand- knotted woolen carpets during the period. Germany formerly held that position.
