Exporters pledge to work together to combat challenges

FE Report | Wednesday, 4 June 2008

The country's exporters Tuesday pledged to work together to combat local and international challenges facing their industries.

Leaders of local exporters' associations were addressing a meeting organised to form a common platform.

The meeting was held at the conference room of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) in the city Tuesday.

The leaders called for improvement in the services of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and customs offices to help the export-oriented industries grow further.

They said improvement should be made in banking, bureaucracy, human resource development and research as well as infrastructure to cope with the global challenges.

"As export-oriented industries contribute greatly to the national economy, we will now jointly move to ensure security of our business operations and assets and gain better supports from the government," said BGMEA president Anwar Ul Alam Chowdhury.

The exporters said they want the government to take speedy decision and adopt measures required for developing competitiveness of different industries facing challenges in the global market.

They argued that the industries producing goods for local market were less vulnerable than those exporting products in the global markets.

Exporters from more than 25 industrial sectors met first on May 22 for discussing the formation of the common platform, which will pursue their common interests and ensure higher growth.

The meeting, however, formed a nine-member working committee, headed by Harun Ur Rashid, a vice-president of BGMEA, to move their mission forward.

The members of the committee are Saiful Islam of Bangladesh Footwear Exporters' Association, Jashim Uddin of Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Selima Ahmed of Bangladesh Artificial Flower Exporters Association, Abul Quashem Haider of Bangladesh Sewing Thread Exporters' Association, Safiullah Chowdhury of Bangladesh Corrugated Carton Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Shafiuzzaman of Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries, Anwar Hossain of Bangladesh Jewelry Exporters Association and Z Ahshan of Bangladesh Handicraft Exporters Association.
