Extensive Kharif-1 cultivation scheme on in Brahmanbaria

BRAHMANBARIA, Apr 4: The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) under Brahmanbaria district and various farm owners here have taken up extensive programmes for cultivation of Kharif-1 crops, sources said. Kharif-1 crop is being cultivated from March 15 to be harvested within the month of June 14. A total of 138173 hectares of land have been brought under Kharif-1 cultivation in nine upazilas of the district this season. Farmers in the district have set the production target 709707 tonnes of Kharif-1 crops this year. According to the local DAE, Hybrid, Upsi and Local boro paddies are being cultivated on 111470 hectares of land, wheat on 2597, maize on 06, winter vegetables on 5777, potato on 2422, sweet potato on 1172, mustard on 5754, pulse on 2447, chhola on 04, mug on 20, split pea seeds on 19, and orohar pulse on 04, hectares of land. Abul Khair, a farmer of Sarail Upazila said that favourable climate condition, quality seeds and saplings, timely use of fertilizers, less pest attack and adequate agri-inputs made it possible for the farmers to cultivate the crop uninterruptedly. Besides, farmers of Brahmanbaria district are also cultivating the import oriented spice crops for boosting production this season, sources also said. According to the DAE sources, about 6135 hectares of land have been brought under spice cultivation in Bijoynagar, Akhaura and Kasba upazila of the district this year with a production target of 40000 metric tonnes. Of the total 807 hectares of land have been brought under onion cultivation and the production target is 6242 tonnes. About 872 hectares of land have been brought under garlic cultivation while the production target is 6232 tonnes. A total of 2149 hectares of land have been brought under coriander cultivation while the production target is 3647 tonnes. 2624 hectares of land have been brought under chilli cultivation while the production target is 2271 tonnes. 41 hectares of land have been brought under ginger cultivation while the production is 612 tonnes and 42 hectares of land have been brought under turmeric cultivation while the production target is 226 tonnes. Deputy Director (DD) of local DAE Md Mozammel Hoque told the Financial Express that DAE has taken various steps to increase the production of all sorts of spice crops to meet the local demand and reduce dependency on import. The DAE has also been providing farmers with quality seeds of the spices, inputs, trainings of proper crop diversification, land management and utilization of latest technologies, Hoque added. Besides, Bangladesh Krishi bank (BKB) Brahmanbaria region has disbursed Tk 1.5 million loans against the target of Tk 4.5 million in eight months of current financial year on two percent interest rate for boosting production of import oriented crops like garlic, ginger, onion, chili, pulse oil seed etc. AF Hossain Ahmed, BKB Chief Regional Manager for Brahmanbaria said, "Disbursements of the easiest term agri-loans at only two percent interest rate among the farmers as per directions of Bangladesh Bank has been proved to be very effective for expanding spice crops cultivation."
