Extensive programmes for cultivation of winter vegetables, spices in N dists

SIRAJGANJ, Dec 5: The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) of Rajshahi division and various farm owners have taken up extensive programmes for cultivation of winter vegetables and spices in the areas, sources said.
Under the scheme, a total of 10,39,747 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation of various winter crops and about 3,09,372 hectares of land under the cultivation of spices in 16 northern districts during the current season.
According to the DAE sources, the production target has been fixed at 42,12,940 tonnes of spices in the northern districts including Sirajganj, Pabna and Bogra.
Of the total, 3,70,241 hectares have been brought under Boro, 9,920 hectares under wheat, 4,114 hectares under maize, 10,120 hectares under potato, 27,020 hectares under sweet potato, 37,737 hectares under groundnut, 9,977 hectares under mashkalai, 4,204 hectares under pea, 1,39,802 hectares under coarse pulse, 4,407 hectares under lentil, and 9,702 hectares under snap melon (futi).
A total of 20,10,277 tonnes of Boro paddy, 1,79,279 tonnes of wheat, 17,407 tonnes of maize, 1,87,210 tonnes of potato, 2,70,410 tonnes of sweet potato, 71,449 tonnes of lentils, 62,205 tonnes of groundnut, 6,749 tonnes of gram, 8,027 tonnes of mashkalai and 4,902 tonnes of pea are expected to be produced in the districts.
Besides, the targets of production of spices including cumin seed, cassia leaf, black pepper, onion, garlic, peanut, coriander, ginger, pepper and mustard has been fixed at 698,517 tonnes, sources added.
The district wise land cultivation and production target is as follows:
Pabna 60,010 hectares and 18,550 tonnes, Rajshahi 24,705 hectares and 71,610 tonnes, Chapainawabganj 12,120 hectares and 40,905 tonnes, Naogaon 29,495 hectares and 79,330 tonnes, Natore 54,700 hectares and 66,970 tonnes.
