Extortion case filed against ex BNP lawmaker in Jhenaidah

JHENAIDAH, July 13 (UNB): An extortion case has been filed against former Bangladesh Nationa-list Party (BNP) lawmaker Shahidul Islam and his nine associates.
Kartik Halder, former general secretary of Fishermen Cooperatives Society, filed the case against them with Moheshpur thana Thursday night.
Kartik alleged the former BNP lawmaker and his associates went to Solemanpur Baor in November 2006 and demanded Tk 0.5 million (5.0 lakh) from the fishermen.
"As we refused to give them the money, they took away Tk 0.525 million deposited with the samity by its members, fishing equipment worth over Tk 0.2 million and finally drove the fishermen out of the water body", Kartik said in his case statement.
The other accused in the case are Shahidul's brother in-law Shahidul Islam, Rafiqul Islam, Ali Akbar, Moshiur Rahman, Forkan Ali, Taddut Halder, Nazrul Islam, Zafar Ali and Abdus Sattar.
