RANGPUR, Dec 13: Extraction of date Juice started in full swing in different parts of the district with the advent of winter, sources said.
People of the region extract juice from date trees every year in winter. The season brings a festive mood among the people who live in villages.
Villagers organise 'nabannya utsab' to celebrate harvesting of fresh 'Aus' and 'Aman' paddy. Housewives prepare various kinds of pithas (rice cakes) and payesh with date juice. Pithas and molasses are very popular in the region.
Nurul Haq, a juice extractor otherwise known as 'gachhi' of Taraganj Upazila, said it costs Tk 25 to Tk 30 to prepare one kg of molasses, which is sold at Tk 35 to Tk 45.
While visiting some upazilas of the district, molasses was found to be selling between Tk 40 to Tk 50 per kg.
Another gachhi Ahidul Islam said he earned between Tk 120 to Tk 150 a day by selling date juice.
A good number of people, engaged in collecting and selling date juice, maintain their family through the business.
