PABNA, Dec 24 (UNB): A suspected extremist was killed in a shootout between Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) troops and his cohorts at Purbo Bonogram under Ataikula Upazila Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Shahai (28), son of Abu Taleb Mullah of Purbo Bonogram in the upazila.
Official sources said, Shahai was area commander of Purbo Banglar Communist Party (ML-Jono Juddha) and wanted in seven cases, including murder and robbery.
RAB-12 sources said a team of the anticrime elite force along with local police raided a field at Purbo Bonogram when the Jono Juddha leader and his comrades were lying in wait "for committing robbery." The RAB members cordoned off the area in a bid to arrest them.
But, sensing their presence, the outlaws opened fire on the law-enforcers that triggered a gun-battle, said one RAB source.
"Robber Shahai was seriously injured during the shootout. He was taken to hospital where doctors declared him dead."
Four of the law-enforcers sustained injuries during the shootout.
A revolver, one shutter-gun, one single-barrel gun and 33 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the scene, the sources said.
