Facebook was reopened in Bangladesh Saturday night after the government formally lifted the weeklong ban on the social networking website just before the midnight.
Sources said the telecom regulator formally asked the international gateway operators to unblock the access to Facebook at 11:38 pm.
Accordingly, the homepage of the highly popular website started to become available at around 11:40 pm.
Chief Executive of the international internet gateway operator Mango Telecom Mir Masud Kabir said, "We received an instruction from the telecom regulatory commission at 11:37pm asking for withdrawal of the restrictions and the site was reopened a minute later."
The BTRC officials said that the government decided to lift the ban on Facebook after the US-based company agreed to remove the offending images of the Prophet Mohammed (SM) and the country's political leaders.
