Factory owners fined Tk 1.40m in Chittagong

CHITTAGONG, June 02: Two factory owners have been fined around Tk 1.4 million on charges of illegally drilling water of abundant quantity by installing deep tube-wells at two factories based in Madarbari area in the city for a long time without obtaining licence.
Chittagong Port (CP) Magistrate Munir Chowdhury also assigned with the charge of Chittagong WASA conducted the drives recently in co-operation with C'WASA Revenue and Engineering Department and realised the fines.
According to the concerned sources, Pragati Bakery Limited and Awan Foods Limited illegally installed two deep tube-wells of four inches diameter and had been extracting underground water of up to crore litres for the last few years and thus evading government revenue.
According to the C'WASA Act, it is mandatory to obtain a licence for any deep tube-well used for industrial and commercial purposes.
