Thursday, 21 August 2008

A special court dealing with high-profile corruption cases Wednesday sentenced Faisal Morshed Khan, son of ex foreign minister M Morshed Khan, to 10 years in jail on two counts of charges, reports UNB.

Judge AKM Arifur Rahman also fined Faisal Tk 1.0 million, in default, to suffer another year behind bars. Faisal, a businessman, was tried in absentia.

The court also asked authorities to confiscate his property worth over Tk 16.6 million.

Of the jail term, seven years came for acquiring wealth illegally while three years were for hiding information about his real wealth in a statement submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission.

"The sentences come into effect immediately upon his arrest or surrender to the court," says the court order.

On December 10 last year, the ACC filed the case with Gulshan Police Station.

It accused Faisal and his wife Shyama Sejan Khan of amassing about Tk 78 million beyond their known sources of income and concealing information about their wealth worth over Tk 69.3 million.

Earlier, the High Court had quashed the proceedings of the case filed against Sejan.
