Faizee wants to resume practice, chance little

Saturday, 14 July 2007

Controversial Judge of the High Court Faisal Mahmud Faizee, who resigned Thursday, wants to resume legal practice but there is little chance for him to do so, as the Bangladesh Bar Council revoked his enrolment as advocate for tempering with his LLB mark sheet.
"I would like to get back to my original legal profession, but it depends on the results of the dispute over my LLB certificate pending with the High Court," Faizee told UNB Friday.
"I want to devote the rest of my life to the welfare of the people of Chittagong, especially Fatikchhari, my own area," he said, adding that he would not join politics again.
Faizee said as a human-rights activist he would extend his all-out cooperation to the distinguished persons of the society "who are being harassed without any reason by a section of media."
Meanwhile, Faizee told the media at his Gulshan residence Friday that he did not stand down due to pressure from any quarter. "Even I didn't resign after being disappointed. I felt an urge to quit to protect the image of the Supreme Court," he said.
The immediate-past BNP-led 4-party alliance government made Faizee Judge of the High Court along with 18 others on August 23, 2004. The appointments had evoked resentment among the lawyers of the Supreme
Court Bar at the time, as they complained of "political considerations".
Later in 2006, the government confirmed his appointment, triggering a commotion among the lawyers that prompted the Supreme Court Bar Association to boycott his court.
After nine weeks of his appointment as judge, a newspaper report leaked out the LLB certificate of Faizee as 'fake' that unleashed widespread criticism.
On March 3, the LLB results of Justice Faizee were cancelled as per a Chittagong University (CU) Syndicate decision. Later, the CU Controller of Examinations published a gazette notification canceling 50 LLB certificates, including that of Faizee, for tampering with results after the Syndicate had approved the inquiry reports.
Following the CU actions, Justice Faizee went on leave and later was de-listed from the bench. Since then, he had been spending time sitting idle.
However, the Supreme Court Bar Association appreciated Faizee for his resignation.
