FE REPORT | Monday, 28 August 2023

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said on Sunday that some of its leaders left the country for Singapore are just for medical treatment but not for hatching conspiracy.
Terming it as baseless talks made by the ruling party, joint secretary general of BNP Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, "These are baseless talks. They (three party leaders) are seriously ill. So they have gone to Singapore for medical treatment".
He made the remarks after placing wreaths at the grave of National Poet Qazi Nazrul Islam marking his death anniversary on the Dhaka University campus.
He said that party standing committee member Dr Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain went to Singapore one month back due to his serious illness.
Besides, he said that secretary general of the party Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir used to receive medical treatment in Singapore regularly.
He said that Mirza Abbas is also seriously ill and he went there (Singapore) for treatment.
"So, why the question of conspiracy arises? Don't they have right to receive medical treatment? he asked.
Mr Rizvi said that demanding for a free, fair and participatory election doesn't mean to involve in conspiracy.
"A neutral caretaker government will be formed very soon by compelling the government to resign for holding a free, fair and participatory election in the country," he mentioned.
He said that party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is now in prison due to her stand in favour of democracy.
He also said that acting chairman of the party Tarique Rahman was also sentenced/ jail term for his speech in favour of democracy.
He said that several hundred BNP leaders and activists are now languishing in jail only for political reasons.
He said that National Poet Qazi Nazrul Islam is one of the main sources of their (BNP) inspirations to get rid of this present suffocating situation.
He said the poems, songs of the National Poet is an inspirational source for the countrymen.
He said that Nazrul had covered all sections of our Bengali literature.
Health affairs secretary of BNP Rafiqul Islam, convener of JASAS Helal Khan and member of executive committee of BNP Aminul Islam and member secretary of JASAS Jakir Hossain Rokon accompanied Rizvi.
Meanwhile, at a doa mahfil programme at the party's Nayapaltan office on Sunday Rizvi said that Awami League general secretary Obaidul Qader made the comments against BNP just out of his (Obaidul Quader) guilty feelings.
Refuting Qader's comments against BNP Rizvi said, "Awami League has created series of death procession. Awami League waged movement during 1991 and 2001 when BNP was in power. They (Awami League) also said that they would not allow the then ruling BNP to pass the day undisturbed."
He said that Begum Khaleda Zia has been undergoing treatment at a city hospital. Rizvi and other participants at the doa mahfil prayed early recovery of ailing Begum Khaleda Zia.
Volunteers affairs secretary of BNP Mir Sorafat Ali Sopu, member of party's executive committee Maulana Shah Mohamnad Nesarul Haque and member secretary of Matshyajibi Dal Abdur Rahim were present, among others, at the doa mahfil.
