Fakhrul for polls in rational time

FE REPORT | Thursday, 31 October 2024

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for the incumbent government to hold the next election within a rational time with an eye to fulfilling people's expectations.
"Please arrange the general election within a rational time so that people can cast their votes to form a new parliament..."
Mr Fakhrul made the call at a discussion marking the 17th founding anniversary of the National People's Party (NNP) at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Wednesday.
He said political parties expected that the interim government would discuss with them before forming a search committee for the formation of the new Election Commission (EC).
The government has formed the search committee recently.
Mr Fakhrul said, "We want that the EC be formed and that the national election be held as early as possible."
"We do believe that the interim government doesn't have any different political agenda. The person, who heads this government, has a name and fame globally. He himself earlier said he had no political ambition."
"...The Awami League has destroyed the country's economy and democracy. The immediate-past government siphoned off $17 billion abroad," he alleged.
"So, this government should not tread another alley, rather they should hold a free, fair and neutral election."
He also said the AL established a culture of bribery and nepotism at all sectors of the country.
