Tuesday, 30 December 2014

Several senior BNP leaders including acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir have been sued over an arson attack in Dhaka Sunday ahead of the nationwide shutdown. Paltan Police Station ASI Abdul Malek Hawlader filed the case naming 43 BNP leaders and activists, OC Morshed Alam told bdnews24.com on Tuesday.
The accused also include Joint Secretary General Amanullah Aman, BNP Dhaka metropolitan unit Convenor Mirza Abbas and Standing Committee member Rafiqul Islam Miah. A government bus was set ablaze on Sunday evening at the capital’s Purana Paltan. Three people also suffered burns when an auto-rickshaw was torched at Mirpur that night. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia had recently said that Fakhrul was accused in 59 cases filed by the government over different incidents of political violence that took place last year. Fakhrul also at a discussion on Tuesday claimed the government was establishing a ‘reign of terror’ by filing false cases against opposition leaders and activists.
