Faldo Series B’desh Golf Championship begins

Faldo Series Bangladesh Championship-2014, the qualifying golf meet of the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, began at the Kurmitola Golf Club in the city Tuesday, reports UNB.
Senior Vice-president of Bangladesh Golf Federation (BGF) Major General Mizanur Rahman Khan inaugurated the three-day international junior golf tournament being held for the first time in Bangladesh under the auspices of BGF.
BGF Secretary General Brigadier General Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah was also present on the occasion.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony tomorrow (Thursday) and he will distribute prizes.
Ninety-one junior golfers from 12 teams are competing in the four age-group categories-three for boys and one for girls. Three boys' categories are Under-21, Under-18 and Under-16 while the lone girls' category is Under-21.
Speaking at a press conference after the opening ceremony, Tournament Committee Director Brigadier General Abidur Reza Khan (retd) said the top finishers of the four categories will earn the rights to play in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final to be held in the Chinese city of Shenzhen from March 1 next.
Besides, another golfer manifesting an overall good performance in the meet is likely to be included in the Shenzhen-bound Bangladesh team subject to the approval of the organisers, he said.
The tournament's score will be counted in the world ranking.
The Faldo Series Championship, considered to be the biggest junior meet in the world, is now played in some 40 countries across the globe with the co-operation of highest golf body 'Royal & Ancient' (R&A) and Asian Tour.
BGF Joint Secretary Lt Col (retd) M Abdul Bari, Tournament Coordinator Major (retd) Mahmudur Rahman Chowdhury and tournament referee Manzoor Ahmed were also present at the press conference.
