Falu, Gani taken on police remand, Kader sent to jail

Monday, 11 June 2007

Mosaddeq Ali Falu, former MP of BNP, was for the first time Sunday taken to three-day police remand since he was arrested on February 5 during the crackdown on suspected corrupt politicians, report agencies.
Falu, a close associate of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, was taken to police remand when he was produced before the CMM Court in connection with misappropriation of relief CI sheets, blankets and rice. Police prosecutor sought for seven days remand, but Magistrate Jagannath Dev granted three days.
Pleading Falu's innocence his counsel Sanaullah Miah opposed the prayer, saying that the so-called relief materials were recovered when Falu was in jail. Falu's lawyer submitted before the court that he did not misappropriate the relief materials. The CI sheets were allotted to the commissioner of Ward No-37 for distribution, which he failed. It was not the responsibility of the MP to distribute those to the distressed people.
The court rejected his plea, and granted three days remand to police.
On March 2, the joint forces recovered 600 pieces of relief CI sheets, 60 blankets and 15-kg of rotten rice from the ward commissioner's office that falls under Falu's constituency.
Later a case was filed against six people, including the commissioner Ruhul Amin Bhuiyan, four employees of his office, and Falu. The case was sent to the ACC on April 21 for investigation. Four people accused in the case are at large.
On the other hand, Obaidul Kader, joint general secretary of Awami League, was sent to the Central Jail when produced before the CMM Court on the same day after three days of police remand.
Police prosecutor submitted that Kader should be detained until significant clues and information he has provided about high-level corruption are collected.
Kader's counsel pleaded for his bail. He submitted that Kader has been brutally tortured during interrogation that left him sick.
Magistrate Mamun Al Rashid ordered for his medical treatment as per the jail code.
Meanwhile, Osman Gani, chief forest conservator, was again given to three days remand to police when he was produced before the CMM Court at the end of five-day remand.
Police prosecutor said, Gani who has accumulated unearned wealth in millions, is required to be interrogated further to unearth his money and gold.
