Farakka Barrage to be a threat to very existence of BD: Fakhrul

FE REPORT | Thursday, 16 May 2024

Farakka Barrage will become a dangerous threat for the very existence of Bangladesh, said Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Almagir on Wednesday.
"May 16 is Farakka Day, a historical and important day of our national movement. People of Bangladesh participated in a long march movement 48 years ago toward Farakka responding to the call of late Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani to get just share (as per international law ) of the Ganges River water," he said in a message issued to the media marking Farakka Day on May 16.
Mr Fakhrul said that India started diverting Ganges water unilaterally by building barrage on Farakka point, turning the north-western part of Bangladesh into a desert.
