Farid Gazi laid to rest

SYLHET/HABIGANJ, Nov 20 (BSS): Veteran politician and Awami League (AL) Lawmaker Dewan Farid Gazi was laid to eternal rest Saturday at the graveyard adjacent to the mazar of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) in Sylhet city after Asr prayers following the last namaz-e-janaza with state honour.
Earlier, the body of Farid Gazi was taken to Central Shaheed Minar of Sylhet where thousands of people and leaders of different political and social organisations paid last respects to him by placing wreaths on his coffin.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith and Sylhet city Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, among others, attended the janaza.
Earlier, his namaz-e-janaza was also held at Bahubal Upazila Parishad Ground at 9 am, Balidhara Bazaar at 9.30 am and JK High School Ground under Nabiganj Upazila at 10.30 am.
Farid Gazi, also an organiser of the War of Liberation, died of old-age complications Friday morning at Square Hospital in Dhaka.
Foreign Minister Dipu Moni Saturday expressed deep shock at the death of Dewan Farid Gazi.
Hearing the death news of Farid Gazi, the foreign minister rushed to his residence in the city and consoled his family members.
State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Munnujan Sufiyan also condoled the death of Dewan Farid Gazi.
In a message of condolence, she said the country had lost a dedicated politician with the death of Dewan Farid Gazi and the people would always remember his contribution to the national politics.
