Farmers' cooperatives to ensure fair prices of agri products stressed

State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanok Saturday directed the cooperatives department to form farmers' cooperatives society at the grassroots level to ensure fair prices of agriculture goods, breaking the syndicate of middlemen, reports BSS.
He also sought cooperation of successful cooperative societies to rejuvenate the sick cooperatives.
The state minister was addressing as chief guest a discussion organised by the Cooperatives Department at its conference room in the city.
The meeting discussed how to rejuvenate the sick cooperatives in light of the experiences of the successful cooperative societies, said an official release.
Jahangir Kabir Nanok urged the successful cooperative societies to take special programmes to make the country's youth efficient and active.
He said the leaders and activists of Juba League would be given special training at Bangladesh Academy forRural Development (BARD) in the first phase to make the disheartened and unemployed youth solvent and self-reliant.
They will help implement the government's 'charter for change' and make the ongoing cooperatives movement a success, he added.
Chaired by Cooperatives Registrar Suraiya Begum, the meeting was also addressed by State Minister for Cultural Affairs Promad Mankin and Rural Development and Cooperatives Secretary Samar Chandra Paul as special guests.
Dhaka Divisional Joint Registrar M Abul Hossain presented a keynote paper.
The meeting was informed that six successful cooperatives played remarkable roles in poverty alleviation by investing Tk 10.39 billion (1,039 crore) through their 0.32 million (3.25 lakh) active members.
The six cooperative societies are: Kingshuk, Kalab, Hazaribagh Mahila, Baridhara Mahila, and Chandra Shikkhita Bekar Jubak Cooperative Society.
