Farmers expecting bumper maize production

CHAPAINAWABGANJ, July 5 (UNB): Farmers of the district are expecting a bumper production of maize in the current season.
Farmers have brought 6,922 hectares under maize cultivation with an output target of 48,000 tonnes this season. They are expecting to get 30 to 35 maunds of maize from per bigha.
The farmers have already started harvesting maize hoping for a bumper production. They are also happy as they are getting fair price of their produce.
Per maund of maize is being sold between Tk 430 and Tk 450 in the local markets, sources said.
When contacted, the farmers said that they have cultivated maize on the land twice more than the previous year as it is gaining popularity in the district.
Department of Agricultural Extension sources said maize cultivation is gaining popularity day by day for its easy cultivation process and its low production cost.
They said production cost of maize on per bigha land is maximum Tk 3,000 while it needs Tk 5,500 to cultivate paddy.
