Friday, 28 December 2007

JHALOKATI, Dec 27 (UNB): Farmers of the district are expecting a good harvest of mustard seeds this season even after the cyclone Sidr had extensively damaged vast croplands.
Officials of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said farmers of the district had cultivated the crop on 800 hectares of land this season and were expecting to produce 800 tonnes of mustard seeds.
Farmers said they had sown seeds on the land before the cyclone-hit the district but the cyclone could not damage the fields because the mustard was cultivated on highlands.
Nurul Islam Talukder of Ramchandrapur village under Sadar Upazila has cultivated mustard seeds on his 60 decimals of land. He said: "I have cultivated mustard seeds for earning a handsome profit."
Salam Biswas of the same village, who has cultivated lentil as fellow crop with mustard seeds on one acre of land, said he had spent Tk 1,500 to cultivate his land and was expecting to earn a net profit of Tk 5,000.
