Monday, 21 April 2014

SYLHET, Apr 20 (UNB): Farmers and agriculture officials are expecting bumper production of Boro paddy at Biswanath upazila of the district in the current season.
Cultivation of Boro paddy in Biswanath upazila shows bright prospect and the yield is expected to stand near 25,000 tonnes, according to the upazila agriculture office.
About 7,30,00 hectares land of the upazila was brought under Boro cultivation in the current season.
Paddy fields have already taken a ripe golden hue and the harvest will begin in full swing in the next week.
However, a few of the farmers have already started harvesting the paddy as they are worried about tentative Kalbaishakhi storm and hailstorm, which are common phenomenon at this time of the year.
Talking to UNB, Aftab Ali of Noagaon village said he has already started harvesting the paddy and the production is satisfactory.
Golam Ali Rabbani of Dearigaon village said although he expected a very good paddy output, the yield would stand a bit lower than the expectation as the standing crops in his field was affected by the hailstorm during the last month.
Narendranath Dutta of Ramkrishna village said his paddy has grown well, but it can be damaged if the hailstorm hits again.
