Farmers lay siege to agri office for fertiliser

BHOLA, July 14 (UNB): Hundreds of farmers Thursday besieged the district's Monpura Island Upazila agricultural office demanding urea fertiliser.
Farmers said they need 275 tonnes of urea fertiliser for the current month but so far they did not get any allotment from the authority concerned. They said that not a single sack of urea is available in the open market.
They also said the urea crisis has been persisting since last June as they received only 18 tonnes against the requirement of 50 tonnes for the month.
Monpura agricultural officer Swapan Kumar said the crisis turned acute due to late delivery of fertilisers from Chittagong.
DC Belayet Hossain when contacted said arrangement has already been made to send some 24 tonnes fertiliser immediately to Manpura to meet the crisis.
