JOYPURHAT, Sept 29: Farmers of the district are making a good profit by growing off-season bean.
Sub-assistance agriculture officer of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DEA) Azizur Rahman said growers are happy over the yield of the vegetable.
Hundreds of grassroots farmers have attained financial solvency by cultivating off-season bean as they get repeated bumper yield every season, he added.
The Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) supplied quality seeds to the farmers to make the farming programme a success.
Growers of Kalai, Akkelpur, Panchibibi, Khetlal and Sadar upazilas of the district started the farming of the vegetable from the last month.
Some of them have started harvesting their produce and making a good profit.
DAE office sources said some 155 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of the vegetable though the target was 135 hectares.
In a recent visit at different kitchen markets the correspondent found each kg of the newly-harvested bean is sold at Tk 100 to Tk 120 in the retail market.
Wholesale rate is between Tk 80 and Tk 90.
"I have cultivated off-season bean on five decimals of land spending Tk 5,600," said farmer Ariful Islam Tota of Akkelpur upazila.
Deputy director of DAE Sudhindranath Roy said, "We encourage the farmers to bring more land under the farming of the item as it is a profitable venture."
