NILPHAMARI, Jan 22: Farmers of the river banks of 17 dried up rivers of Nilphamari district are planting Boro seedlings in the riverbeds which are dried up and turned into almost farmland.
Sources said the farmers are in a hurry in planting IRRI and Boro seedlings on the riverbeds as late cultivation would culminate in late harvesting and the cropland may go under water in early rain causing damage to the crops .
The 17 rivers are now ecologically dead which flowed across the six upazilas of Domar, Dimla, Jaldhaka, Kishorgong, Nilphamari sadar and Syedpur Upazilas of the district. The rivers are Teesta, Buri Teesta, Naotari, Kumlai, Deonai, Kalomdad, Burikhora, Charalkata, Khatamari, Dhaijan, Mora Dhaijan, Chikli, Khorkharia, Shalki, Jamuneswari and others.
