RANGPUR, Dec 20: As harvest of Aman paddy has almost completed in eight districts under Rangpur division, the farmers of the region are now preparing Boro seedbeds in full swing with much enthusiasm to finish their tasks ahead of severe cold and foggy weather.
While visiting different areas under the region it was found that farmers busy preparing their Boro seedbed as early as possible in order to avoid dense fog and extreme cold weather during winter.
Many farmers said they faced huge loss in previous years as most of their Boro seed beds got damaged due to cold injuries caused by severe cold weather. So this year without making any delay they are preparing seedbed in full swing to complete the task before intense cold weather.
During last few years many farmers could not save their seedbeds from the impact of cold even after spraying medicine. Boro seedbeds in many areas had turned yellowish and got damaged, resulting in less production of paddy sources said. This year growers have become more alert to combat any adverse situation, sources said.
Badrul, a farmer of Hamidpur village under Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur, told FE that last year he prepared 6 decimals of seed beds with the expectation to procure quality Boro seeds from there but a major portion of the seedbed perished owing to severe foggy weather. So this year he has already prepared his seedbed in order to get rid of the adverse situation, he added.
DAE sources said the farmers are giving their optimum effort in preparing seedbeds in a bid to get quality and mature seedlings for transplantation during peak period, sources said. The department is also providing necessary assistance to the growers in this regard.
The BADC and different companies are distributing seeds among the peasants, sources added.
