Farmers threaten to stop supply of sugarcane

RAJSHAHI, Sept 27: Leaders of North Bengal Sugarcane Farmers Association (NBSFA) have threatened to stop supply of sugarcane to the sugar mills of the region unless the farmers are allowed to make 'gur' (molasses) through using power crushers.
Leaders of NBSFA have also demanded an increase in the price of sugarcane to Taka 120 per maund by the mills authorities from the present rate of Taka 90 and return of all power crushers confiscated during the last crushing season. On Saturday, leaders of NBSFA placed those demands at a meeting held at the premises of North Bengal Sugar Mills at Lalpur in Natore.
Presided over by Principal Ibrahim Khalil, President of NBSFA, the meeting was addressed, among others by Matiur Rahman Majdar, Senior Vice-president, Advocate Al Mamun Sarker, General Secretary, Hafizur Rahman, Afaz Uddin, Abdul Aziz and Bulbul Ahmed.
The speakers at the meeting said, the farmers should be given the right to use their farm products according to their will.
