Faruk admits govt failure in controlling campus violence

Tuesday, 14 April 2009

Commerce Minister Lt Col (retd) Faruk Khan Monday recognised that the government failed a bit in controlling violence at the country's educational institutions, reports UNB.
"This (controlling campus violence) is the only failure of the government in its first 100 days. But, we've achieved success in knocking down the prices of essentials and bringing about a change in the political culture," he told reporters at his office after a meeting with Chinese Ambassador Zheng Qingdian.
He said some people were trying to make the campus situation volatile in different ways like extortion and establishing supremacy.
"I can't say there is no involvement of BCL workers in it," he said assuring that the government would identify them and bring them to book.
Replying to a question, Faruk Khan said they think the trial of war criminals, reining in militants and improvement in law and order situation are some of the big challenges the government faced.
"There was no anti-graft move in the last two years… whatever had been done was against politicians and democracy," he mentioned.
Faruk Khan said a parliamentary body would look into irregularities in the ACC in the last two years. "The process will begin with investigation into irregularities of ACC, which is responsible for dealing with corruption in the country."
He said: "No one, not even influential people, would be spared when it comes to corruption. There is no scope to keep them out of investigation."
Listing achievements of the AL-led grand alliance government, Faruk Khan said the activities of the government in its first three months are much better than any previous government.
