Owners of local fashion houses are making a hefty business in recent weeks as shoppers throng their city outlets to collect colorful and traditional dresses to celebrate the upcoming Bengali new year -- Pahela Boishakh. Targeting the carnival, most of the fashion houses are showcasing exclusive and attractive items this time in line with the Bengali culture and tradition to woo the prospective customers. "Yes, we are having rush of customers this time and it's very much inspiring," owner of a boutique shop at Baily Road said adding that they have enriched their collections with traditional dresses like panjabi, saris, fatuwa, salwar-kamiz and items for kids. He said prices vary from Tk 500-800 for a panjabi or Fatuwa, Tk 1000-8000 for a sari and Tk 180-1200 for a kids' item. But the shoppers alleged that the prices of the products were very high, forcing them to spend extra on the occasion, which will be celebrated on April 14. "I bought a salwar-kamiz at Tk 1600 from an outlet at Bashundhara City. I purchased the same 6 months back at Tk 1200," Papia Islam, accountant of a private firm, told the FE. Another shopper alleged that the owners hiked the prices of the products only for extra profit as there were no logical grounds to do that. Admitting the complaint of price hike, the owners said that the recent increase in fabric prices at both local and overseas markets forced them to increase the prices. "The salwar-kamiz which we sold at Tk 900 last Bangla new year now costs Tk 1100," said Romeo, manager of Deshal, a local fashion house in the city's Aziz super market. "We don't increase the price as it will cast a negative impact on the business by reducing the customers' purchasing capacity," he added. Nitta Upohar, popular fashion house at Aziz Super Market has come up with new designs in saris, tops, panjabi, fatuwa, T-shirt, children's garments, on the occasion of Pahela Boishakh. "The prices of the saris, designed by the renowned local artistes, range from Tk 1100 to 2500", Bahar Rahman, owner of Nitya Upohar told the FE. Ambos cotton sari with the combination of red and black colours and Jhaoban are the new arrivals of Jhalak showroom at Baily Road. Milon Gazi, manager of the showroom said, both of the saris are selling well this year at his showroom. The prices range from Tk 1800 and Tk 2200.
