Faster economic dev of char people stressed

GAIBANDHA, Feb 25 (BSS): Speakers at a function have stressed the need for bringing the neglected and underprivileged char (island) dwellers under all kinds of facilities of the state with a view to changing their socio- economic conditions.

"Coordinated and united efforts of all stakeholders including the government and non-government organisations are essential for faster socio-economic development of the people living in the backward and disaster-prone char areas".

They said this in a view exchange meeting entitled "problems of char people and our duties" between the authorities of Michael Samuel Charitable Trust (MSCT), UK and the journalists of national dailies in the conference room of SKS Foundation at Bharatkhali under Shaghata Upazila in the district.

The speakers also said living standard of the char dwellers would be improved and their developments on education, health, agriculture and income generating would be accelerated as they have also the fundamental rights to get the services of government and non-government organisations like other people of the mainland.

Giving importance to taking initiatives, they also urged all including the stakeholders and donors to come forward with humanitarian consideration to stand beside the char dwellers aimed at mitigating their sufferings caused by floods and river erosion.

Michael Samuel, Founder of MSCT, in his speech, assured the participants of his financial support to run the welfare activities for the char people of the district.

Julia Samuel, representative of Oxfam, GB Louisa Daubhey, programme manager of the organisation Farid Hasan Ahmed and a group of journalists took part in the discussion.

Michael Samuel visited the working areas at the chars of Fulchhari and Gazaria unions of Fulchhari Upazila in the district.
