Fateful April 29 today

CHATTOGRAM, Apr 28: Tomorrow (Friday) is the tragic April 29. On this day in 1991, thousands of people were killed and property worth over thousands of crore taka damaged in the deadliest cyclone that lashed the southern coastal belt in the country.
Though three decades have already elapsed since the tragic cyclone in the coastal belt, the locals are yet to forget the tragic memories of that fateful day. People arrange milad mahfils and rallies in observance of the day every year at the coastal belt from Chattogram to Cox's Bazar.
The security of the people of the coastal belt in Chattogram is yet to be ensured fully. They are passing their days at high risk of natural disasters like the cyclone of April 29 in 1991 till now as the under-construction dam there is yet to be fully completed.
The government is constructing the coastal embankment from Patenga to Sitakunda along the marine drive road. About 90 per cent construction work of the much-awaited Coastal Road, popularly known as Ring Road has been completed and the rest of the works are likely to be completed in the current year.
The Project Director and also the Chief Engineer of Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) Engineer Kazi Hasan Bin Shams said, "The 90 per cent work of the Ring Road has already been completed."
He said, "Now we are working to complete the works on connecting roads. After completing the connecting roads, the Ring Road will be opened formally."
