The country's apex trade body Sunday expressed deep concern over the arrest of businessman Abul Kalam Azad, owner of Azad Products and Grand Azad Hotel.
In a statement, the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) said: "He (Azad) was remanded in police custody in a police-related case, which has worried the country's business community."
The FBCCI demands fair and neutral investigation into the incident and said those responsible for the incident should be brought to book.
The trade body also drew attention of the police high-ups to his family's allegation that the businessman was tortured during one-day remand.
Police arrested Azad, chairman of Azad Group, from his Grand Azad Hotel at Purana Paltan in the city Thursday on charge of an attempt on the life of a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inspector, who went there to seek a job for his brother.
