FBCCI election deferred further

Tuesday, 6 November 2007

FE Report
The election of the Federation of the Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) has been deferred further, following the extension of the period of stay order by the High Court (HC) for one month ending December 4 this year.
The HC gave the order November 4 when the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) prayed for the extension.
Earlier, the HC on September 30 issued a stay order on the holding of the FBCCI biennial election up to November 4 following a writ petition filed by BGMEA first vice president MA Salam and a former BGMEA president, Annisul Huq.
The court also issued a show cause notice upon the FBCCI as to why the de-listing of the BGMEA representatives from the voter list will not be illegal.
The representatives of the BGMEA filed the writ petition when the FBCCI arbitration board de-listed five of its representatives including aspirant president candidate Anisul Huq from the voter list.
The FBCCI arbitration board in its meeting on September 25 de-listed the names of the BGMEA representatives from the final voter list upon a prayer of one apparel business man Mahbub Minhaz.
Mahbub Minhaz filed a prayer to the FBCCI arbitration Board claiming that the representatives of the BGMEA committee were not legal.
However, as per the FBCCI Election Commission schedule, the election is due for November 20 next.
In the meantime, the tenure for the present FBCCI committee expired September 5 and the Ministry of Commerce extended it up to December 5.
