FE Report
The biennial polls of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) was held amid festivity at Motijheel in the city Saturday.
Election Board officials told the FE that a record number of voters cast their votes in the apex trade body election for the term 2010-2012.
"Around 90 per cent voters cast their votes in the election," said an official of the FBCCI Election Board.
Some 341 businesspeople out of 351 belonging to the chambers and 1199 out of 1340 under the association group cast their votes to elect their leaders.
Election commissioner Shakhawat Hossain visited the polls centre installed at the seventh floor of the FBCCI Bhaban in the morning.
Mr Shakawat talked with the officials of the FBCCI and its Election Board chairman Professor Ali Ashraf, MP.
In all 58 candidates contested, 38 of them to get elected as 14 directors allocated to the association group and 20 for as many directors from the chamber group.
The chamber group comprises 70 district chambers affiliated with the FBCCI and the association group represents its 272 affiliated trade and industry associations.
As per the trade organsations act, 16 directors are reserved for the potential chambers and associations, - - eight from chambers and eight from associations.
As per the FBCCI by-laws, the office bearers- president and two vice presidents- will be elected, by the new directors, Monday afternoon.
The by-laws stipulate that if the chamber group gets the president, the association group would get the first vice-president, and the second vice-president would go to chamber group.
The business community does not expect to see strong competition this year for the top post of the FBCCI as, so far, only one aspirant is there for the president post.
AK Azad, managing director of Ha-Meem Group and publisher of the daily Somokal, was nominated from BCI and has already been elected to the board. He is the lone aspirant for the president post.
