The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Wednesday launĀched 'one businessman-one family' project to create employment opportunities for the disadvantaged youths of the society by making them self-reliant.
The Federation has formed FBCCI Foundation and set a target to create employment opportunities for 7,000 to 10,000 people every year and primarily it has selected 487 persons to give computers, sewing machine, water pump, rickshaw van etc.
As part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR), the FBCCI Wednesday organised a programme at the Institution of Diploma Engineers to hand over the items to the youths under the project 'one businessman-one family'.
Commerce minister M Faruk Khan and adviser to the Prime Minister HT Imam attended the programme.
Mr Faruk said the FBCCI has done a very good job by giving the products from their own pockets to the disadvantaged.
"This will increase the image of the business community as they have responsibilities toward the society," he said.
Some unscrupulous traders intentionally create artificial crisis of sugar and edible oil and increase the price. This type of attitude destroys the image of business community, he added.
Mr Imam said the government would give all-out support to the private sector to create more employment opportunities. The initiative of the FBCCI will help the government create more jobs.
He said the private sector should come forward to help make the prices of essentials stable and urged the traders to increase the supply to meet shortfall.
"The government is now feeling a kind of pressure over the price-hike of essentials," he said.
FBCCI president Annisul Haq said the foundation has a plan to create employment opportunities for 7,000 to 10,000 people but it received lukewarm response in the first year.
He, however, said if the Federation takes the initiative, 50,000 youths could be employed annually.
"There are 5.0 million businessmen in the country and if one businessman takes the responsibility of a destitute family, the socio-economic condition of the country will be drastically changed in the next five years," he said.
The Federation gave different items to 487 and out of them, 61 are disabled and 205 received training from Youth Development Department.
FBCCI first vice-president Abul Kashem, vice-president Abu Alam Chowdhury and director Golam Dastagir Gazi, among others, spoke on the occasion.
Papia Begum of Tangail and Ishrat Jahan of Barisal received sewing machine while disabled Nawsher Ali got a computer in the programme. The foundation also gave the recipients travel fare to go back to their homes.
